Magic The Gathering is coming to a big screen near you!
Hasbro has announced some exciting news for Magic: The Gathering fans—they’re bringing the iconic card game to screens everywhere.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro is teaming up with Legendary Entertainment to create a shared Magic: The Gathering universe. This project will include both movies and TV shows, with the first focus being on a movie.
Legendary Entertainment’s chairman of worldwide production expressed their excitement by saying, “We pride ourselves on being thoughtful caretakers of singular, beloved IP, and no property better fits that description than Magic: The Gathering.” Legendary has a great track record with beloved properties, having produced films like Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Detective Pikachu.
There’s an interesting twist, though. It seems like the new live-action projects from Legendary might not be connected to the Magic: The Gathering animated series that was announced for Netflix. While it’s not entirely clear, there’s also a chance that plans have changed, and the animated series could become part of this larger shared universe.
Magic: The Gathering was created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 and has since become one of the most popular trading card games globally. Wizards of the Coast was acquired by Hasbro in 1999, and now this iconic game is a part of Hasbro’s impressive lineup.
Hasbro isn’t new to turning its products into movies. They’ve already brought G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Dungeons & Dragons to the big screen. With several projects in the works, including new G.I. Joe films, a Power Rangers reboot, and even a Beyblade movie, Hasbro is well-prepared to expand the Magic: The Gathering universe into live-action entertainment. Not only this, but with Wizards of the Coast move in recent years into their Universe Beyond crossovers, they have gone from one strength to another! With this year featuring loved IPs like Final Fantasy & Marvel.
Magic: The Gathering has a dedicated fanbase and a rich history that spans decades, making it perfect for captivating storytelling on both the big and small screens. Fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Planeswalkers and epic battles brought to life, honoring the game’s legacy while introducing new audiences to the enchanting world of Magic.
Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting venture continues to unfold!
