A Judges comments
Embarking on the Path of Judging
When tasked with the idea of writing an article on Flesh & Blood, I found myself at a loss for what to discuss. It wasn't until my partner suggested, "Write about why you became a judge," that clarity dawned. Thus, I find myself here, ready to share the journey of why I chose to become a judge and the enriching experiences it has brought me.
What do I judge? My domain lies within the realm of Flesh and Blood, a captivating card game hailing from none other than New Zealand. For the past two years, I've held the mantle of a level one judge, eagerly eyeing the horizon for a promotion to level two.
Why the gavel? My journey into judging began after a mere three months of immersing myself in Flesh and Blood. Venturing into the fiercely competitive arena of Auckland Calling, I initially participated as a player. Engaged in a Monarch Sealed format, my card pool proved to be – for lack of better words - amazing, though my deck-building skills still left much to be desired. Despite early victories, it was during the third round, seated at table 4 amidst the tournament's elite, that anxiety gripped me fiercely. The sweaty palms, racing heartbeat, and muddled thoughts encapsulated an experience many crave, yet it wasn't for me.
Disliking the rollercoaster of emotions didn't diminish my passion for the FAB community. Forming cherished friendships and witnessing the camaraderie, I felt compelled to contribute to the events in any way possible. Thus, the suggestion to become a judge was extended to me.
Aware of the exceptional judge program crafted by LSS, I pondered, "Why not?" The process wasn't as simple as a mere examination; one had to apply and hope for the chance to undertake the level 1 judge quiz. Fortunately, luck favored me, granting me the opportunity to partake in the quiz on my first attempt. Despite initial failure due to inadequate preparation, a month later, I triumphantly passed with flying colors.
What fruits has judging borne? Since donning the judge's mantle, I've presided over two significant events in New Zealand and journeyed across the Tasman Sea to judge in the Melbourne calling aswell! Along this path, I've encountered a myriad of remarkable individuals, forging bonds within an extraordinary judging fraternity. Despite infrequent reunions, our gatherings evoke a timeless sense of camaraderie.
Witnessing the growth of communities and the enjoyment of events orchestrated with my involvement has been immensely fulfilling. For those seeking proximity to the action without the strain of gameplay-induced anxiety, venturing into the realm of judging may offer a gratifying alternative. With many trading card games boasting their own judge programs, the path lies open for those willing to explore or inquire at their local game shop for guidance.
