Slivers Are Back?!? Edge of Eternities Spoilers Ahead!
Slivers Are Back, Back Again.
Slivers Are Back, Back Again.
They're back. The hive. The horror. The synergy-packed swarm. Slivers—Magic: The Gathering’s most infamous and beloved creature type—are crawling back into the limelight, and it’s not just a nostalgic whisper this time. The latest Edge of Eternities story is dropping hints loud and clear: Slivers might be returning, and the Multiverse isn’t ready.
The story follows Sami and Tan as they scour a desolate mining world for a powerful artifact. But between the dust and danger, there’s something familiar—and terrifying—lurking: Slivers. In-universe, they're horror movie icons, fictional monsters that send chills through the setting. But the way the story frames them? It's practically glowing with foreshadowing.
It gets creepier: Slivers are described as growing inside hosts—a brand-new wrinkle that screams Alien vibes. It’s a deliciously sinister twist that could redefine the type if they’re making a true comeback.
Traditionally, Slivers are all about collective strength. Each one grants a bonus—flight, first strike, regeneration—that every other Sliver shares. But with over 100 printed already, reinventing them is no easy feat. That’s where Edge of Eternities’ artifact and land themes come in. Imagine Slivers that channel the power of cards like Birthing Pod, or ones that awaken lands to fight beside them. It’s fertile ground for innovation.
The host-based lore also hints at something akin to the “Incubate” mechanic—perhaps Slivers cocooning themselves in artifacts before springing to life. For a tribe that’s long been vulnerable to board wipes, that’d be a powerful evolution.
Of course, it’s possible this is just clever world-building. Slivers could simply be scary stories within the plane—nothing more than set dressing. Characters like Sami’s cat, Mirri, feel like deliberate callbacks too. It could all be a way to explore classic Magic through a new lens.
And yet… why mention Slivers at all if nothing's coming? These creatures are notoriously tough to balance and design, and their legacy is rich. That Wizards would casually drop them into this new world without purpose? Feels unlikely.
Whatever the truth, one thing is certain: the buzz is real, and the hive is humming again. Slivers might just be the stars of Magic’s next big evolution—and we’re here for it.
